Expanded Access' goal is to
connect people with incomes under $25,000 a year to the Internet, and
to:
- Make Internet-enabled computers available at convenient
locations throughout the community, and in the comfort of one’s
home.
- Involve low-income families in their healthcare options:
empowering them to access vital information on doctors, hospitals, and
health services (flu shots, mammograms, planned parenthood, etc.) and
health plans.
- Create Community Portals that link service providers,
local businesses, and e-government services with the people who need
them.
- Offer educational programs that teach people how
to use computers and see the value of information and communication
technologies in their lives.
- Teach low income residents how to utilize the Internet
for employment search.
Low-income residents will be able to use computers
and high-speed Internet connections at home and within collaborating Centers
or at self-service computer terminals located in neighborhood churches,
libraries, stores, and hospitals. Some of the benefits participants will
realize include:
- Allowing a single parent to communicate with her
children’s teachers by e-mail and do research for homework assignments.
- Helping someone quickly locate low cost prescription
drugs or services that subsidize day care costs using e-government services.
- Helping families take advantage of cost saving
purchases and ways to save for their children’s college education
by using on-line services like www.upromise.com
